The CRAP test

During this blog post, I will be analyzing two articles, one from google and one from a database to see which one will give me better information about the history of Hong Kong. The database I am using is ProQuest. For each search I will search: "History of Hong Kong" and select the first website/article.

CRAP test for ProQuest article

C- The article was published in 2000, somewhat current. I think this is current enough to earn a C.

R- The sources are listed and the article is not bias. This article passes the R portion of the test.

A- The author's name was did not seem familiar to me and wasn't the easiest thing to find on the internet, so not the best authority. This will not pass as an A.

P- This article is definitely fact, not opinion. I give the article a strong P.

Overall, the information I get from ProQuest is CRP. This information was almost good enough to pass the CRAP test.

CRAP test for Google result

C- The article was published in 2010. This is a definite C.

R- No sources are listed so this will not be earning an R.

A- The article is written by "History.com staff". This is a

questionable answer that will not be earning an A.

P- The article from Google was not bias and was fact not

opinion. This will earn it a P

All in all, this article will be achieving a CP. This was

not very close to passing the CRAP test. As you can

probably see, databases are more reliable than search

engines.
